The weekend was filled with fun and events…all of which included much to much food and drink. During one party your daughter takes a picture of you, you can’t believe how HEAVY you look. Hoping that it’s the camera angle you continue on your day of course feeling bad about yourself…here it is New Year once again I haven’t lost those extra pounds. That evening before retiring to bed you vow that TOMORROW will be the day where you start taking your health seriously. You always have the best of intentions.
Monday morning is here once again…you wake up to face your truth and march over to the bathroom scale. The last time you checked in was your last physical where your doctor told you that if you could just drop 20 pounds your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers would drop significantly. Needless to say this too fell on deft ears. You tap the scale and gasp at the number…unable to conceive how this could be, you step off and on again. Truth is you now realize that you are 20 pounds heavier than the last time you sweared that you were going to lose the weight. But now instead of 20 pounds you need to drop 40 pounds. The task seems impossible,” How will I ever lose 40 pounds on my own??”
Your self talk sounds something like this. “Ok I am an intelligent person, I KNOW WHAT I NEED TO DO. I am just going to eat less and exercise more. I can do this …I THINK…and the first bit of self doubt presents itself.
You push your doubt aside and start your day. Of to work, you are feeling hopeful and in control of your life. You grab a piece of fruit and a coffee instead of your regular breakfast sandwich, YES you feel proud that you have resisted your first temptation. Once at work you are greated with e-mails, conference calls, and disgruntled clients. By 11 the donut tray is calling and you concede by devouring not just one but two cream donuts. The voice in your head is scolding you, “That wasn’t smart…you are supposed to be in a diet…pull it together.”
A lunch meeting gives you a option to order either a salad or a club sandwich and fries. You know the salad is the smart “choice” but you are craving bacon and the comfort of those golden crispy fries. You tell yourself you will only eat half but once again you leave lunch feeling guilty and defeated…knowing that the healthy option was present.
Now it is 5:00. You close up at work and start the commute home, you are prepared to go to the gym but once you arrive you are so overwhelmed with the question “What should I do today?” An aerobics class?” I feel clumsy and don’t know the routines.” Maybe the machines…”I don’t know how to work them.” ” I will just stick to cardio.” You jump on to the treadmill, look around the room at the ” skinny people” and again feel defeated knowing that “I will need to walk FOREVER if I am ever going to look like them.” You walk for another 15 minutes and feel so bad about yourself that you go home, eat ice-cream and end the day once again brow beating yourself for failing yet again. You go to sleep promising yourself TOMORROW will be a better day…
